Sabrun Jameel • 01.25.10
Once upon a time in a far away place, there lived a man and his sons. This man didn’t have two sons, or three, or four, not even five. He had twelve sons. Yes that’s right, 12. And he them all dearly. However he did have his favorite.
A beautiful boy full of akhlaaq and iman. His name was Yusuf. Now the other boys realized that this young brother of theirs was their father’s favorite. So what happened?
They got jealous of course.
So now shaitan took this opportunity and filled their hearts with anger and fury to the point that they wanted to kill him. So they made a plot. They were going to throw him into the well. And they eventually did.
Now this father was waiting patiently for his sons to come back. And when they did, he saw that his beloved Yusuf was not with them. He panicked.
Where is he?
A wolf ate him.
What?
Here’s his shirt….covered with blood.
I always find it amazing how patient Prophet Ya’qub was when they showed him the shirt. The feeling of grief and sorrow of loosing a beloved one filled his heart and overflowed through his eyes. But he never said an innapropriate word out of anger and he never complained to anyone. Except Allah. Even the few words that he cried out when he was given the horrifying news with weren’t much of a complaint either.
‘I shall exercise patience without any complaint, and I shall seek Allah’s assistance against what you have devised.’
So imagine you had someone you really loved, and you would do everything it took to make sure that they weren’t harmed. But in the end, you let him go out with people who you know could harm him, and when they come back they give you a blood stained shirt of his. I don’t think any of us would be able to sit and take that news and just say Sabrun Jameel let alone live with those people for another decade or two. May Allah have mercy on Prophet Ya’qub.

The Ten Qiraa’aat • 01.15.10
The ten authentic preserved qira’aat are as follows.
The first seven were preserved by Mujahid and by Imam Shatibi in his famous poem “Ash-Shatibiyyah”. The Qari of each style had his style preserved by two of his students, among whom there would be small variations but not as significant as the variations between the Qira’aat themselves. The Qari had many students but the choice of who preserved them was that of Imam Abu ‘Amar Ad-Daani [Whose tariqa is used in the so called "Pakistani" mus-hafs in the recitation of Hafs 'an Asim] in his famous book “Kitab At-Tayseer fil Qira’aatis Saba”. The name in the square bracket is what the Qira’ah and the Tariqah are more commonly known as.
1.) From the Tabi’een, there was Imam ‘Asim ibn Abi Najood Al-Kufi ['Asim], who was the chief Qari of Kufah, Iraq at the time. Interestingly he was also the Qur’an teacher of Imam Abu Hanifa (rah) who recited in this style. The Qira’ah of Imam ‘Asim was preserved through his two students Shu’ba ibn ‘Iyaash Al-Kufi [Shu'ba] and Abu ‘Amr Hafs ibn Sulaiman Al-Asadi Al-Kufi [The tariqa of Hafs 'an 'Asim is the most prominent recitation used today by over 90% of the Muslim World. We all recite from in this style basically.]
2.) Imam Naf’i ibn Abdir-Rahman ibni Abi Na’eemil Laythi [Naf'i] from the holy city of Madinah, which recited in his Qira’ah. During his time he was the chief Qari of Madinah and had studied Qur’an from over seventy of the tabi’een. He was the Qur’an teacher of Imam Malik (rah) who recited in the Qira’ah of Nafi’. Imam Nafi’s Qira’ah was preserved through his two students ‘Isa ibn Mina Az-Zarqi [Qaloon] and of course Imam Abu Sa’eed ‘Uthman ibn Sa’eed Al-Misree [Warsh]. The Tariqaan of Imam Nafi’ are recited in many north african countries.
3.) Imam Abdullah ibn Kathir ibn ‘Umar Al-Makki [Ibn Kathir] of Makkah. He was also amongst the tabi’een and met some of the Companions of the Prophet (saw). His Qira’ah was the Qira’ah of the people of Makkah as well as Imam Shaf’i (rah). Preserved through two of his students Imam Abul Hassan Ahamd ibn Buzzah Al-Makki [Bazzi] and Imam Abu ‘Amr Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Al-Rahman [Qumbul].
4.) Imam Zabaan ibn Al-’Alaa ibn ‘Ammaar Al-Basree [Abu 'Amr], born in Makkah but moved to Basrah, Iraq where he was the chief reciter. Also studying the Qur’an with many of the Tabi’een. The two students preserving his recitation were Imam Hafs ibn ‘Umar Ad-Doori [Ad-Doori] and Imam Abu Shu’ayb Saalih ibn Ziyad As-Susi [Susi].
5.) Imam Abdullah ibn ‘Amir Al-Yahsabi ['Ibn 'Amir] of Damascus, Syria. His style was adopted by the people of Syria. He is also the reciter with the least people between him and the Prophet (saw), studying directly under the Sahabi Abu Ad-Darda (ra). His recitation was preserved by two students Imam Hisham ibn ‘Ammaar Ad-Damishqi [Hisham] and Imam Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Zhakwan [Ibn Zakhwan].
6.) Imam Hamzah ibn Habeeb Al-Kufi of Kufah, Iraq. He also met some of the Companions of the Prophet (saw). Preserved through Imam Khalaf ibn Hisham Al-Baghdadi [Khalaf 'An Hamza] (who also has his own Qira’ah, number 10) and Imam Abu ‘Isa Khallad ibn Khalid Ash-Shaybani [Khallad].
7.) Imam ‘Ali ibn Hamzah ibn ‘Abdillah also known [Al-Kisaa'ee] from Kufah, Iraq. Preserved through Imam Al-Layth ibn Khalid Al-Baghdadi and [Al-Layth] and the student of Abu’Amr Al-Basree, Imam Hafs ibn ‘Umar Ad-Doori [Ad-Doori].
8.) Imam Ya’qoob ibn Ishaq Al-Hadrami Al-Basri from Basrah, Iraq. Preserved by Imam Muhammad ibn Muttawakkil [Ruways] and Imam Ruh ibn Abdil Mu’min Al-Basree [Rooh].
9.) Imam Yazeed ibn Al-Qa’qa’ Al-Makhzoomi [Abu Ja'far al-Madani] from the Tabieen. Also one of the teacher of Imam Naf’i. He was in Madinah, preserved through Imam ‘Isa ibn Wardaan [Wardaan] and ImamSulayman ibn Jamaz [ibn Jamaz].
10.) Imam Khalaf ibn Hisham Al-Baghdadi [Khalaf] from Baghdaad, Iraq who was one of the preservers of the style of Hamzah al-Kufi, also had his Qira’ah. Preserved by Imam Ishaq ibn ‘Uthman [Ishaq] and Imam Idris ibn ‘Abdil Kareem Al-Baghdadi [Idrees].
Helping Haiti • 01.15.10
Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh
The recent earthquake in Haiti has had devastating effects on life and property, and has affected the lives of millions of people. The death toll is rising steadily, and numbers appear to increase exponentially. It is at times like these that some people renew their faith in God, while others are tested in their faith.
The pictures and videos of the destruction in Haiti melt our hearts and stir our souls: we pray that Allah makes their affairs easy for them, and blesses them with His choicest blessings. But we must do more than mere prayer. We are required at all times, and especially at times like these, to show our mercy and generosity, in the name of the God that we believe in, for the sake of the religion that we stand for, and following the example of the Prophet that is the ‘Prophet of Mercy’. I strongly encourage all Muslims, and especially our students at AlMaghrib Institute, to do what they can at this time of crisis.
Islamic Relief has taken the bold initiative of collecting a million dollars for relief work in Haiti. They are one of the most reputable charity and relief organizations in the world, and I have worked with them on numerous occasions as they spread mercy across the globe. Let us join hands with them and help out in this effort as well!
Wa salaam

A Different Ending • 01.12.10
Imagine this:
He’s on his way home, it’s hours past midnight and it’s dark out. The events of the evening are running through his head as he makes his way down the quiet street. He comes to the corner where he usually crosses, with the stop sign that is near invisible to drivers making the bend. As he steps out onto the street, he smiles to himself recalling the evening, lost in his thoughts, with his headphones in his ears. Just then, he hears a car screech and turns just in time to see the whites of the drivers eyes as he tries to break but can’t. Next thing he knows metal body meets his and he is sent flying through the air. He’s sprawled on the pavement 5 meters away, breathing his last breaths, the words of the panicking driver mean nothing to him as his vision fades and he struggles to say the words….
Scenario 1:
He had just finished exams that day along with his other friends. Midterms could be a drag and as it was he hadn’t had much time to relax and enjoy. After all, university is the best time of your life, isn’t it? He deserved a reward, he knew it.
“I’m going out ma!” he called into the kitchen as he put on his jacket.
“Where to Yasin?” his mother asked wiping her hands on her apron.
“Out, friends. Ammar’s going too.” he said pulling on his shoes. “I’ll be back later.”
His mother frowned slightly, “At this time of night?… Yasin your brother needs help with math, you know how he gets…” she started.
“When I come back. Bye Ma” he said and slammed the door as he left.
“Yasin!….. Salam,” his mother whispered as she shook her head and returned to the kitchen.
As Yasin walked home, he thought of the amazing night he had spent hitting some of downtown’s hottest night spots. His mother didn’t know, but what she didn’t know couldn’t hurt her, right? And besides, a lot of his friends had drank, he didn’t. And he didn’t dance, just listened to the music. Yeah.
….Now as he lays on the cold pavement, he struggles to say the words he knows he must, but cannot, as sharp regret pierces his inner being, the music on his mp3 player looping in his ears…
Scenario 2:
He had just finished exams, and he was so tired of poring over his biochemistry and psychology textbooks, but the moment he left the exam hall he felt like a free man once again. He felt a pang. He had spent so much time studying that he had neglected his best friend. The last time he had seen his friend was weeks ago. As he began to leave campus, he came accross his two friends Anwar and Muzammil.
“Salam ‘alaikum” he said to his two friends.
“wa ‘Alaikum Assalam. Hey Zaid, we were just talking, and a bunch of brothers are getting together at Yusuf’s apartment, you in?” Anwar asked.
He smiled, “Of course I’m in, see you tonight then insha’Allah.” He smiled as he made his way home. He felt elated, his soul nourished. The hours they had spent praying Qiyam, reciting Quran and discussing the trials of the dunya at Yusuf’s apartment had left him feeling whole, complete again. The tears they had shed that night, in contemplation of their Lord, seemed to have softened his heart and the Quran he listened to now filled his heart with contentment…..
Now as he lays on the pavement, head throbbing, struggling to breathe, the Quran continues to play in his ears, his friend in this life, he loved it so dearly. And the cherished words he knew, lived, breathed and acted upon came easily from his lips.
“Undoubtedly, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour, and He sends down rain and knows what is in the wombs of the mothers and no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow and no soul knows in what land it will die. Undoubtedly, Allah is the Knower, All Aware.” (surah Luqman, ayah 34)
